On this day trip from Santo Domingo, we'll visit the Pomier Caves, where we'll admire their cave art. We'll also discover two old Dominican sugar mills and visit the Columbus Lighthouse, where Columbus' remains lie.
Day Trip Details
At the indicated time, we'll pick you up at the San Francisco Ruins and, from this point in Santo Domingo, we'll drive west. On board the vehicle, you'll be provided with sandwiches, juice and mineral water.
We'll first drive to the province of San Cristobal, where we'll visit the Pomier Caves. In these caves, we'll take a 1-hour tour to see the most remarkable cave paintings of the Antilles. During the tour, we'll also learn about the legends related to the offerings to the Taino deities that took place in these underground galleries.
Then, we'll return to the vehicle to continue our day trip to the old sugar mills of Boca de Nigua and Diego Caballero. Both, which have been declared World Heritage Sites for being the first sugar mills in America, form part of the so-called Slave Route.
During the visit, we'll discover how the African slaves who worked in these places were subjected to forced labour. We'll also learn about the actions of resistance they carried out.
At the end of the visit, we'll leave you an hour to get yourself some lunch, and finally we'll return to Santo Domingo to visit the Columbus Lighthouse, where, according to the locals, the remains of the Genoese man who discovered the New World are located.
After learning about its history, we'll conclude this 10-hour tour at the Plaza de España. In this central esplanade of the capital, you'll be able to visit the Alcázar de Colón at your own pace, where Diego, Columbus' firstborn son, who was governor of the Indies, lived.
